Welcome to Southampton, New York, where Nan and David Adams are giving us a tour of their garden.
We have been married for over 50 years and are going strong so far despite COVID! We love our garden and hope you do too. We have about 10 garden “venues” on only 0.38 of an acre. It is always evolving. We did an addition and gut renovation of the house in 2015 and of course created another garden area.
The back garden in summer, overflowing with flowering perennials.
Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla, Zones 6–10) line the side pool garden, along with chartreuse hostas. At the other end, the hostas are smaller and change to silvery blue to complement the white azaleas in spring.
Looking from the “croquet” garden room toward the pool area and pool house, you can see ‘Coral Meidiland’ roses (Zones 6–10), ‘Dynamite’ crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica ‘Dynamite’, Zones 7–9), ‘Summer Sun’ Heliopsis (Heliopsis helianthoides ‘Summer Sun’, Zones 3–9), and dwarf magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora, Zones 7–9).
The garden at one end of the pool.
The garden at the other end of the pool includes double tiger lilies (Lilium lancifolium ‘Flore Pleno’, Zones 4–9), white hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens, Zones 3–9), and purple phlox (Phlox paniculata, Zones 4–8).
Here’s a close look at ‘Leda’s Lover’ daylily (Hemerocallis ‘Leda’s Lover’, Zones 4–10), David’ phlox (Phlox paniculata ‘David’, Zones 4–8), and liatris (Liatris spicata, Zones 3–9).
‘Blue Bird’ hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus ‘Blue Bird’, Zones 5–8) and red Monarda (Zones 4–9) grace the front yard.
This spot to sit in the garden is flanked by crape myrtles and backed by a neatly sheered hedge.

Very beautiful gardens! Thank you for sharing!
Absolutely a grand garden! Love all the color throughout!
Nan & David - I enjoyed looking at your long borders backed by those super neat dark green hedges. Especially "the back garden" and the section of pool garden with the double tiger lilies. I can imagine how much you must enjoy peering closely at the Rose of Sharon and the Bee Balm as you slip out of the gate for a walk around the neighborhood.
What a little piece of paradise. Alice
Your gardens have left me breathless!
This is a simply glorious garden - I miss gardening in the Northeast so much and looking at your beautiful spaces is like a walk down memory lane. Thank you for sharing!
I got to the end of your photos and wanted to see MORE! (so I went back and looked at them all again!)
I just love your garden, so tastefully done, every statue and every plant is perfect!
I'm so very impressed with the beauty you've both created!
I'm looking at your garden photos while snow is falling to blanket my still blooming garden. Makes your photos even more appealing! I would love to see a plot plan to begin to understand how you have crammed so much beauty into a .38 acre yard. Thank you for sharing.
I was particularly taken by your 'back garden' in the summer, and with Leda's Lover - what a gorgeous daylily! I had no idea there were any that were such a clear white. Thanks for sharing.
The combination of the ‘Blue Bird’ hibiscus and the red monarda against the white picket fence is so lovely! I love how the "splotch" of Blue Bird picks up the color of the monarda. I could easily while away the day strolling through your garden!
Oh how beautiful and lush your gardens are!!! The colors and varieties are marvelous! Thank you for taking the time to label and share with us all!
Nan and David, you have done an awesome job. I especially love your Summer back garden in it's colorful array but your entire yard is beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing. Blessings to you.
