Today we’re visiting Johanna Dominguez, who has another wonderful garden in Buffalo, New York.
These photos are from last year, the second year since the garden has been established. I like to focus on a combination of edibles and native species. As a lifelong nature enthusiast and multigenerational farmer, I believe it’s important to both provide habitat and grow my own food.
I custom-built the planted fence and switch it out with annuals every year. I try to do something different every year. It is a little bit tricky because it doesn’t get much direct sun at all. The water feature is also custom-built out of elements found when excavating the previous garden.
The fence welcomes you to the garden with a special greeting for fans of The Lord of the Rings.
On the inside of the custom-built planted fence, annuals bring lots of color, mostly from sweet potato vines (Ipomoea batatas, Zones 9–11 or as annual).

Moving on into the garden, the plantings lean heavily on native plants.
Colorful perennials, using mostly natives such as yarrow (Achillea) and white swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata, Zones 3–9).
An airy mixture of mostly perennial plants for an informal garden planting.
Dramatic color for shade from a heuchera (probably the cultivar ‘Caramel’, Zones 4–8).

What a colorful oasis you have crated, Johanna, not only for yourself and neighboring humans but also for the butterflies and bees that must seek out sustenance at your place. I love a private gated garden, and a garden given a name "Valinor"- nice use of that intimate space. Nice "airy mixture of mostly perennial plants", all growing together. The flagstone patio is perfect there.

Your tiny backyard is simply splendid. The fence with planters is an exceptional design, especially with the bold colors of the plantings... I'm guessing it might be copied more than once! It's all beautiful and will certainly give ideas to those with tiny spaces!
