Synonyms: C. 'Bengal Tiger' Genus: Canna

'Pretoria' is perhaps the showiest of all of the variegated cannas and one of the best for hot, humid, sunny southern gardens. Favored for its bright green and yellow variegated foliage and deep tangerine flowers, 'Pretoria' will grow at the edge of ponds in shallow water as well as in normal garden conditions. It is adaptable to heat and humidity. Protect in the northern part of its range, or lift tubers in fall where not hardy and store over winter.
Noteworthy characteristics: Dramatic foliage provides the garden with a tropical feeling. 'Pretoria' can be grown in shallow water.
Care: Provide full sun to partial shade and fertile, moist or wet soil.

This beautiful plant still surprises me. It grows so well despite I have clay soil. If you love tropical plants like I do, you would be in love! I just wanted to have different plants and picked the canna and another type of canna in deep purple... Not knowing they would bloom so beautifully!! They require minimal care and flourish even in partially shaded areas. I have these planted in the front of my home where not too much sun shines until the afternoon so these plants did well! Even survived Hurricane Irene with a few tears here and there. Just keep the leaves pruned and it will stimulate the growth of the plant. The contrast of the deep purple (which blooms red flowers) and the green cannas with the yellowish orange blooms were a gorgeous contrast in the front of my light green colored home. Enjoy!!
