Botanical Name: Allium christophii AL-ee-um kris-TOFF-ee-eye Common Name: Stars of Persia Synonyms: Allium cristophii, Allium albopilosum Genus: Allium

This bulbous perennial produces ribbed stems and strap-shaped, gray-green basal leaves that decline as its flowers form. In early summer, it bears umbels that are 10 to 12 inches in diameter, and contain up to 100 star-shaped fuchsia flowers with a metallic sheen.
Noteworthy characteristics: Flowerheads dry well.
Care: Provide full sun and humusy, well-drained soil.
Propagation: From seed in spring. Remove offsets in autumn.
Problems: Soil-borne fungi may cause bulb rots in damp conditions. White rot, mildew, rust, smut, and various fungal leaf spots. Susceptible to onion fly and thrips.
