Today’s photos are from Cheryl Hoon in Upper Arlington, Ohio. We think it perfectly illustrates that you can make spectacular combinations with common plants. Featured are ‘Hidcote’ lavender (Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’, USDA Hardiness Zones 5-8), marigold (Tagetes cv., annual), ‘Blackie’ sweet potato vine (Ipomoea batatas ‘Blackie’, Zone 11), and creeping myrtle (Vinca minor, Zones 4-9).

Gosh, what a pleasing combination of plants. The Blackie sweet potato vine looks like such a robust exotic...makes me want to try it in the ground next year instead of limiting it to a pot.

I have never seen Blackie standing so tall. That is really impressive. And I love the touch of orange in the midst of all this lushness.

Lovely combination. I like how you combine perennials with annuals. Great work, Cheryl!

For me it's those trees and shrubs forming the back drop that are what make the scene live. I've not decided what that lovely multi trunked tree is, lools like a type of maple but I can't make out its leaf configuration well enough.

'Blackie' does seem to be on steroids! This is a fun combo, Cheryl. I always think about putting sweet potato vines in the ground and it never seems to happen... maybe next year!
