Clethra are deciduous and evergreen shrubs and small trees grown for their fragrant white to yellow-white, cup-like flowers. Leaves are mid- to dark green, alternate, simple, and finely to coarsely toothed. Clethra are suitable for a woodland garden or mixed border.
Noteworthy characteristics:  Fragrant flowers.
Care:  Under glass, grow in acidic soil under bright filtered light. Outdoors, grow in slightly acidic soil in part shade.
Propagation: 

Sow seed at 43° to 54°F in spring or autumn. Root greenwood cuttings in early summer.

Problems: 

Fungal dieback and root rot can occur.
