I have grown many Tall Bearded Iris in Zones 5, 7 and 9, all with success, although in Zone 5 - suburban Toronto - in clay soil, Iris borer was a vexing problem. In my Pacific Zone 9 garden, the soil was rocky on a fast-draining slope, with no borers in sight. My 60 or so Iris cultivars in my Zone 7 garden, on Lake Erie, is on sand with, again, no borer infestation. Simply put, fast drainage, with summer soil kept on the dry side is a good recipe for avoidance of the most damaging pest of Iris, the Iris borer.

I have several different bearded iris, and they grow and multiply like crazy. I love them and look forward to them all spring.

The Bearded Irises easily tolerate desert sun with good soil. They bloom and multiply beautifully in the spring.
