I have grown Crocus sativus in zones 5, 7 and 9. Now, in Zone 7, I have met my first groundhog. It liked saffron - all 150 plants of it. I'll be interested to see if it enjoys Mexican food in spring, when I add cayenne to the plants. And I am tired of hearing about how bad cayenne is for poor animals. In my province, there's scarcely any allowable chemical deterrents, and there's also a huge overreaction to using hot pepper products. The animal only makes the 'mistake' once, and most often, is savy enough to take only an exploratory touch. I am fed up with losing food plants to my local wildlife.
