A Gardening Team Ready for Spring

Sounds like Angela and David make the perfect gardening team!

"My house sits on 5 acres in western Pennsylvania. I concentrate on the flower beds while my husband, David, focuses on the vegetable garden.  We do everything ourselves –  from the automatic irrigation that my husband figured out and installed by himself that pumps water from a ½ acre pond on our property to the birdhouses and bee skeps that I’ve built, which you can see in the photos.  We try to attract birds, butterflies and bees as much as possible, and someday I hope to include some bee hives, and maybe even chickens.  Last year, we planted a wildflower meadow in our field, and I planted 700 daffodil bulbs in the area too.  So, we’re ready for spring!"

Hi Angela and David, 700 daffodils! Wow, please share photos this spring. I would love to learn more about your wildflower meadow. I have heard a lecturer on that while in the master gardener program. The choices between plugs and seeds, using black eyed susan as a transitional plant and so on. Please, please share photos of your meadow. You can share its growth and development with us. Your spring is going to be so exciting. Angela, I love your color combinations, very beautiful! What a smart and wonderful husband to do his own irrigation system. I, who struggle with hoses and sprinklers, applaud.

Stunning! I am breathless considering the man (and woman) hours required to maintain these gardens. And the pollinators adore these gardens. With a home veggie garden too, I hope that you rarely need to travel afar.
What do you do with all that garden waste at the end of the season? Thanks for sharing wonderful photos. Those skeps are beautiful. Do the bees use them?

Well, Angela and David, my gardening brain is abuzz over your handmade bee skep that is so handsomely displayed under the equally nicely done structure. I was not familiar with the word "skep" (ha, and neither is auto correct spelling...it keeps changing it to "skip"). Had to google it and read about the technique of creating one...very impressive skill set you have there, Angela! Your garden beds are wonderful and show that you are achieving your goals of being a generous buffet bar for all sorts of winged critters.

Angela your garden is truly lovely! I particularly appreciate your color combinations. I just googled a bee skep too to find out what it was. Very impressive. Does your garden take a lot of time to keep it looking this beautiful?

Lovely critter (and human) friendly garden. I wonder about the skep. I assume they are for decorative purposes or is it built to have movable parts for health inspection? Very pretty wooden cover for those beautiful works of art. And I am such a pushover for purple and green in the garden. Thanks for sharing.

What a great team with a beautiful garden. It's easy to see why it is so appealing to pollinators and birds. Like everyone else so far, I am crazy about the bee skep. So cool. Keeping bees? A dream of mine. I sure hope you will be able to do that. I also love the three colors of bearded iris together. Keep on sharing.

Wonderful! So full of color and, I'm sure, abuzz with appreciative butterflies and insects. Love your grouping of iris. Sure looking forward to you sending in more photos as the seasons unfold!

Such beauty for the birds and the bees as well as all us human folk :). You can be proud of all your hard work! Love all your plant combinations. Vikki in VA

Breathtaking! You and your husband are clearly talented and tireless. (Is that why I didn't see a place to sit and appreciate your wonderland?) I would love to see more pictures this spring, including some of your vegetable garden. What are some of your favorite border perennials?

Such a delightful garden for all its visitors! I too would love to see your wildflower meadow and am curious to hear how it progresses over the years.

I can only echo what everyone has already said...it is such a beautiful garden (the lavenders, purples and pinks are lovely) and more photos are needed. I would love to see your wildflower meadow photos. Thanks for the visual treat this morning

I feel right at home viewing your garden, Angela and David, for I also adore all the same flowers! Unfortunately, my patch isn't nearly so organized, and no meadow! However, I have two or three wild areas of plants and flowers which I love so am interested in news of how you manage your own meadow. One fellow gardener weeds by judiciously burning the invasive plant roots before growth. If it's any help, I used a small propane blaster which worked well, as does the above gardener. No chemicals required!
Am green with envy of the bee skep! You are clearly both very talented.

Angela and David... you have created a little piece of heaven for all winged creatures! Just thinking about the soft hums that must surround you while working in your gardens is enough to lull me back to sleep. I'm guessing there are invisible directional signs pointing to your magnificent gardens for all things flying that say, 'This way to the A & D 5 star resort! All visitors welcome, you won't go away hungry!!!'
Like everyone else, I need to see more photos!

Absolutely beautiful gardens, Angela and David. It appears that you two make a great team. My husband and I have a similar division of duties and I think that you and I, Angela, have the more fun job. Unlike you, though, water is the most difficult quotient in our garden equation since we have a true drought starting in about May , so I really envy you your pond. Your color scheme and plant choices are so appealing and a bee skep.....definitely will have to check into that. Please share meadow photos, if you have time:(

All I can do is echo everyone else - it's gorgeous! Please send in pictures of meadow with 700 daffodils - I can hardly wait.

  16. greengenes 02/10/2016

Beautiful! Great free flowing feeling and i love the tall grasses behind the fence in picture two. You both make quite a team! Thanks for sharing!

The combination of purple and yellow is just gorgeous, Angela, as is your entire garden. Question: how do you keep the deer from eating your daylilies?

    1. Cenepk10 02/15/2016

The deer never eat my daylillies- guess because they have rose buds to eat ;)

Gorgeous!!!!!!!! Im so ready for spring!!!!
