Native to South East Asia, this genus encompasses 45 species of evergreen trees and shrubs within the magnolia family.

Noteworthy CharacteristicsGrown mostly for their fragrant flowers, Michelias bloom in spring and summer.

CareGrow in sun or part shade. Michelias will perform better in low to moderate humidity. They are not very tolerant of frost or wind.

PropagationSow seeds in autumn in container and under glass. Root softwood cuttings in early summer; root semi-ripe cuttings in late summer. Michelias can be layered in the spring.

ProblemsReceptive to insects, spider mites, and algal leaf spot.
