Early Witchhazels

mdwyer | Posted in Midwest Gardening on

With some unseasonably warm weather this winter, I’m seeing many things emerging earlier and even blooming about a month sooner than expected. The ‘Arnold Promise’ witchhazel (Hamamelis x intermedia) usually is blooming in later March but is showing hints of very early flowers (here in southern WI).  The vernal witchhazels (Hamamelis vernalis) haven’t started blooming here yet which is good.  Despite some cold tolerance associated with these early blooms, the danger with repeated hard frosts is zapping the flowers and losing the show!  What signs of life are you seeing out in your gardens this time of year?
