A Low Maintenance Garden

Marla does lazy quite well!

"I live in Idaho Falls, Idaho (zone 4).  I am a somewhat lazy gardener and binge with my husband about 3 times a year with garden care. So things have to be somewhat low maintenance to survive with me. And I also dearly love trees. So plants are slowly being replaced with shade loving plants in many areas."

The crab apple tree over the driveway is wonderful in the spring with the perfume and bees.  The creeping thyme is another favorite. It loves the hot dry spot at the corner of the driveway.

Your 'bingeing' garden practices are obviously working well Marla. Kick back and relax!

It looks Fab! Great results for your import of time..... Do you put in many annuals then? And, any ideas from anyone on getting rid of voles?? Eternal question , I'm sure. Thx for any ideas. ---that work!

      Hi Carol,

I suffer with the same problem. This year they ate my caladiums and the Asiatic lillies. You have to set traps and be diligent about checking them and setting new ones where you see new activity. My cat loves them. They must be tasty little critters!

I have had years of voles eating all my lily bulbs. This year I tried putting oyster shells in the holes around the new bulbs, I've read it helps.....We'll see it it works??

P.S. I put in alliums , only one came up, The vole has eaten the large lush leaves of that! And all of my columbine...

Your beds are so pretty. I think it's the limited color scheme that appeals to me the most. Yellow, pink, purple, white and of course green: I'd never have guessed those colors alone would work so well together. What is the plant with the yellow and green strappy leaves?

Good for you, Marla, to know what works for you at this stage of your life. Your landscaping is lovely and looks very welcoming. Your crabapple is one of the most bloom laden that I have ever seen. I love that stage when the petals first begin to fall and there's a slight breeze ...it creates that magical fairytale feeling of flower snow. Ha, I'll bet yours is a veritable blizzard!

Garden how you like, Marla...it's the best and only way. Yours is a delightful garden that suits the house and and your style. It's certainly a pleasant and complementary collection of plants, and I celebrate the tree desire as well. I am really admiring that loaded crabapple, a Spring favorite for sure. Thanks for sharing.

It reminds me of a fairy tale cottage...I too have a crabapple that rains petals on us. This is one year that no big wind came along and blew off all the pink blossoms. I can see by the color of your blossoms that you enjoyed your blossoms till the end too! Do I see euphorbia? I love the variegated leaf of the iris- so eye catching. If you can get away with 3 times a year, you're doing something right. Good job!

Hi Marla, I love the garden at the end of your driveway. I think you should add 'sophisticated' to low maintenance in your description. Are the purple spikes Veronica? I was wondering where in the country that plant grows well. It certainly dislikes East Coast acidic soil. Wish I had success with that plant!

I think you're giving 'lazy' a bad name by being so darned successful! Very nice. I love the beds along the driveway. It's a challenge finding plants that are low-maintenance and beautiful, and you've done a great job. I think trees and shrubs are definitely part of the solution, so your love of trees has served you well. And zone 4 at that!!

Garden love! I know there is no such thing as a low maintenance garden but admire your approach and such beautiful results! I, too, plant heavily and let plants "duke it out" in my Z4 garden, but my intentions are truly neglectful and the results not so well maintained as this. Wonderful "tapestry!" I recognize some of these "toughies."

You've definitely got this 'low maintenance' thing down, Marla. Your various beds certainly don't indicate a lack of enthusiasm to the viewer, you have put together great combos that are pleasing to the eye. Well done! Enjoy your relaxing summer!

May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Marla, a low maintenance garden sounds good to my back this morning after my garden 'binge' yesterday. My binges tend to be almost every day, however. Your garden is so appealing with all of the spring colors and the soft pink blossom snow. Your neighbors must love walking down that sidewalk.

Maria: As others have said, you have created a garden that complements your house and gives you pleasure, with low maintenance to boot. To borrow from Kerry Mendez, it's all about creating the "Right sized garden", which is very personal.

I am also stunned by your beautiful crabapple. And those variegated iris' really stand out in the front bed. Wonderful effort. Thanks so much for sharing.
