Botanical Name:
Lilium 'Casa Blanca'
LIL-ee-um
Common Name: 'Casa Blanca' Oriental lily
Genus:
Lilium
Often used by florists and for weddings, 'Casa Blanca' lily has large, pure white, scented flowers.
Noteworthy characteristics:
Vigorous growth, strong stems, very fragrant. Good in containers or borders. Great as cut flowers.
Care:
Lilies are easy to grow in any garden soil—if you remember they like their heads in the sun and feet in the shade. Plant them among shrubs or other plants so that the base of the stem is shaded and the head will be in the sun. This technique prevents the soil above the bulb from drying out too quickly, which can adversely affect any roots produced by the stem before it emerges from the soil. A common mistake is not planting lilies deep enough. Put 6 inches of soil over the top of them to keep them from flopping over. They appreciate a regular feeding when grown in containers; in borders, they will be fine with little feeding.
Propagation:
Remove scales, offsets, or bulblets in late summer. Sow seed as soon as ripe in a cold frame or sow indoors at 65° to 70°F under lights in spring.
Problems:
Gray mold (during wet weather), aphid-spread viruses, red lily beetles, slugs, snails, deer, rabbits, voles, groundhogs.

In a northwest-facing border that is hard on many plants (strong afternoon sun) these lilies have been astonishingly gracious. They bloom beautifully for about a month in summer. When they are in the mood to exude, you can smell them a block away. They have gotten taller every year (about 5 years so far), and spread a bit. They are among throatworts and a few other perennials which shade them at the base. I use an organic bulb food. When planting I also mix in some Jersey green sand to amend the soil, which tends toward clay. Other than staking, little care is needed. I will certainly be adding more of these and the stargazers.
