Botanical Name: Hydrangea serrata hy-DRAIN-jah ser-RAY-tah

Common Name: Mountain hydrangea Synonyms: Hydrangea macrophylla ssp. serrata Genus: Hydrangea

This species was formerly grouped with the Lacecap hydrangeas because of its flattened flowerheads that consist of central, small florets surrounded by showy, larger florets. It is similiar to H. macrophylla but is a more compact plant with smaller flowers and leaves.
Noteworthy characteristics: Blue or pink lacy flowerheads.
Care: Grow in moist, but well-drained soil, in sun to partial shade. Provide shelter from drying winds.
Propagation: Sow seed in a cold frame in spring; take softwood cuttings in early summer, hardwood cuttings in winter.
Problems: Gray mold, slugs, powdery mildew, rust, ringspot virus, leaf spots.

I bought Blue Billows from a nursery in Georgia 10 years ago and it is the most magnificent plant that I own. It is a three season plant also...in the fall the leaves are raspberry pink and gorgeous. I have a garden obsession and own a lot of plants that are unusual for Michigan, some with success and some without success. But this one has never failed to take my breath away...blossoms every year and has lots of shoots to take babies from to make more plants.

I planted this hydrangea this spring and am amazed at the growth and the beautiful flowers it is producing. This plant is a must if you have the room.

This is one of the most widely recognized species of hydrangeas. It boasts a plentiful number of cultivars. The species is divided into two groups: the Hortensias (or "mopheads") have globe-shaped flowers made up of large male flowers, and the Lacecaps have flattened flower heads, with central, female blossoms ringed in larger, male blossoms.
