White Fir in the Winter Landscape

mdwyer | Posted in Midwest Gardening on

I’ve become a huge fan of white fir (Abies concolor) in our area of the Midwest as they are appropriate alternatives to the spruce-dominated residential landscapes in so many areas (don’t get me wrong, I love spruce too).  The white fir offers many cultivars including dwarf and miniature forms, weeping forms, narrow forms and those that get increasingly more gold in winter.  My favorite, though, is the variety ‘Candicans’ that features a “powder-blue” coloration on soft, upright needles.  My second favorite is the variety ‘Blue Cloak’.  While slow-growing, white firs are quite adaptable and are significant contributors in the landscape.  Have you tried Abies concolor yet?
