Last month’s mystery plant was Lobelia cardinalis, otherwise known as cardinal flower. Cardinal flower is a perennial native from New Brunswick all the way down to Texas and Florida, and is hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 2 to 8. In late summer and early fall it bears spikes of brilliant scarlet, tubular flowers that are attractive to hummingbirds on stems 3 feet tall. This plant prefers moist to wet, fertile soil in full sun or partial shade.
