Last month’s mystery plant was Lobelia cardinalis, otherwise known as cardinal flower. Cardinal flower is a perennial native from New Brunswick all the way down to Texas and Florida, and is hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 2 to 8. In late summer and early fall it bears spikes of brilliant scarlet, tubular flowers that are attractive to hummingbirds on stems 3 feet tall. This plant prefers moist to wet, fertile soil in full sun or partial shade. Renee Stucki of Rigby, Idaho, was chosen at random from all correct entries to receive a free one-year subscription to Fine Gardening. Congratulations, Renee!
