Last month’s mystery plant was Allium schubertiia, a flowering member of the onion family that is hardy in UDSA Hardiness Zones 4-10. This Mediterranean native should be planted in fall in a full-sun location with fertile, well-drained soil. Strappy leaves emerge in spring, but die back before the 12-24 inch flowering stalks appear in early summer. The starburst shaped, pale purple flowers add a dramatic twist to any garden, and the seed heads persist for weeks, adding an exciting, long-lasting accent to plant combinations. Congratulations to Michelle Bond of San Francisco, California, whose name was chosen at random from all correct entries to win a one-year subscription to Fine Gardening.
