Genus Michelia

Native to South East Asia, this genus encompasses 45 species of evergreen trees and shrubs within the magnolia family.
Noteworthy characteristics: Grown mostly for their fragrant flowers, Michelias bloom in spring and summer.
Care: Grow in sun or part shade. Michelias will perform better in low to moderate humidity. They are not very tolerant of frost or wind.
Propagation:

Sow seeds in autumn in container and under glass. Root softwood cuttings in early summer; root semi-ripe cuttings in late summer. Michelias can be layered in the spring.


Problems:

Receptive to insects, spider mites, and algal leaf spot.

A Michelia hybrid, bred in New Zealand by Mark Jury, with beautiful lightly fragrant flowers blushed lilac pink and evergreen dark green foliage. It is ideal as a specimen shrub or as a hedge.
