The seed was purchased at Kew and rated 'rust-resistant'. If so, I should hate to see what non-resistant Alcea would be capable of. My plants grew to a vast height and were accompanied by Puccinia [rust] every step of the way. They were not crowded, plenty of free air was available. I'll not repeat growing it.

I planted these hollyhocks three years ago. They stay green all winter long. In the spring they grow stocks of flower buds. They start blooming in Mid-May. The flowers bloom from the bottom of the stock, and then move upwards. The Japanese beetles do love these plants, but They have been able to grow, with a little help from a once a year pest spray when the beetles are at their heaviest. You will not be disappointed with this beauty.
