Fall Planting Trees and Shrubs

DrPulte_Moderator | Posted in Southeast Gardening on

It’s crazy hot right now – however, I’m thinking about planting some trees and shrubs when cooler days arrive.  I have started a practice of pruning when I plant.  It’s so easy to correct structural problems during early days of a plants life!

This article talks more about how I handle small trees: https://www.finegardening.com/project-guides/pruning/proper-pruning-for-young-trees

When planting trees and shrubs in the fall – how heavy do you prune? or do you prune at all?

If the root ball is healthy, I will shape the limbs. However, if the root ball shows signs of stress, I try not to add anymore to the plant. I'll wait a full growing season before pruning. I'm planting a number of woodies this season; here's hoping they're roots aren't too bound

Posey, This sounds like a good method.
