Early Bulbs – Extra Early!

mdwyer | Posted in Midwest Gardening on

It was only a short three weeks ago that we saw heavy snows followed by extremely cold temperatures here in Wisconsin.  I hunkered down, expected a long winter with continued snow and frozen ground (which I prefer, to be honest!).  While, of course, winter is far from over, I’m looking at an extended forecast with above average temperatures over the coming weeks and it sure felt like spring today!  Are you seeing any of your earliest bulbs poking up or blooming? I know that some snowdrops (Galanthus sp.) are starting to bloom in our area although they normally will bloom in March.  Winter aconites (Eranthis hyemalis) are also one of the earliest we’ll see blooming with their cheery yellow flowers and it’s likely they’ll come into flower in the next week or two. Foliage of daffodils (Narcissus) is also making an appearance. What are you seeing out in your Midwest gardens?
