I spend a great deal of time chopping, digging and burning this invasive species out of my woods. It strangles hardwoods and native vines. DO NOT PLANT!!!!!
This plant is on many Invasive Plant lists. It has escaped everywhere in the Northeast, spread by birds eating the berries. It smothers and kills native shrubs and trees, even pulling down large old trees -- you see this along parkways near New York City. Don't plant it. Plant the native C. scandens instead (although it may be hybridizing with c. orbiculatus now).
Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) is considered an invasive species thoughout most of the northeast. Check with local authorities before buying or planting.
