I was a city kid and the first gardening book I ever bought was Linda Yang’s The City Gardener’s Handbook. 
How I poured over that book, trying to maximize our little Brooklyn terrace. I still love to browse through it, though I now have more garden space than I can manage. Looking back, there’s a lot to be said for having limited space! A link to Yang’s wonderful book is in the comments.
