Unusual Conifers

It is so bleak at the moment in Omaha.  Every time there is a prediction of snow all we get is the equivalent of a sugar dusting on French Toast.  The last one I thought was frost until I was corrected by my husband Jon. Thank goodness for conifers.

One of my favorite larger conifers is ‘Domingo’ Pine (Pinus strobes x ayacahuite ‘Domingo’), AKA Mexican White Pine.  A hybrid pine, it has fairly good resistance to drought, which has proven to be a good characteristic for us on our acreage project, doing quite well in the fields.  The large needles which are thicker than our standard White Pine are stiff and quite visible from a distance.  Establishing quickly and growing at a good pace, the grove is filling in nicely, even though they started out as only 6’ specimens.  There is also a Limber Pine ‘Domingo’.  I don’t know if it is the same plant with a different name or a different species.  Something to research if anyone is inclined to do that.
