Hellebore Season

Plantswoman | Posted in Pacific Northwest Gardening on

Even in the cold and damp the hellebores are slowly lifting their heads.  Such a great plant at this time of year.   Beautiful flowers from bud to finish in double or single blooms.   I have several different types in my garden.   The Helleborus orientalis and Helleborus X hybridus types can use some tidying up.   Usually this time of year I remove the old leaves from the previous season.    The flowers are more visible without the leaves.   This pruning can also reduce the chances of new foliage getting Hellebore leaf spot or  Microspaeropsis hellebori.

One of my favorites is Hellebore X hybridus ‘Picotee’

Three other types of hellebore,  H. sternii, H. argufolis, and H. niger, flower on the same stem as the leaf so these don’t need to be cut back until after blooming.

What is your favorite type of Hellebore?

I am in love with all of them. Is that 'Picotee'? I need that one now!

Yes That is Hellebore 'Picotee'. Very different bloom and fairly upright growing.
