One Window Box, Four Seasons

A beautiful display for every time of the year

One Window Box, Four Seasons

Howard Nemeroff sent in these stunning photos of his window box throughout the year. The plantings are over-the-top beautiful, and it is a great example of how even the smallest space can be transformed into a lush garden.

spring window boxIn spring, bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla, Zones 6–9) anchor the planting, complemented by annuals in yellow and white.

summer window boxThe summer window box is a riot of color and growth. Tall pink begonias (Begonia hybrid, annual), white caladiums (Caladium hybrid, Zones 9–11 or as a tender bulb), and trailing dark purple sweet potato vines (Ipomoea batatas, Zones 9–11 or as an annual or tender bulb) are just some of the many plants creating this beautiful display.

fall window boxOrnamental cabbages (Brassica oleracea, cool-season annual) take center stage, while orange-and-yellow-veined crotons (Codiaeum variegatum, Zones 9–11 or as an annual or houseplant) bring autumnal colors to the background.

winter window boxFor winter, cut conifer branches are the base, liberally decorated with cones, fruits, and colorful branches.

Gorgeous! Do you have several boxes so that one can be maturing for the next season while the current one is "on stage"? They are so lush and full. Are some of the plants, aside from the winter ones, cut flowers (eg, the hydrangeas)? Are any living plants in pots sunken into the window box? I marvel at the mechanics of these creations.
