Hi GPODers!
We’ve been reveling in spring here on Garden Photo of the Day, but today we’re heading south of the equator to see what fall is looking like in the Southern Hemisphere. We’ve had several GPODers contribute from the opposite end of the world, but today’s submission was a little extra exciting.
Almost 10 years ago, we featured the garden of Ezequiel Martín Barakat in Ezeiza, a city located in the Greater Buenos Aires area of Argentina (check out those posts here: A Cottage Garden in Buenos Aires and Cottage Style Dreams in Buenos Aires). Most of his plantings were very young at the time, and the space was just starting to grow into the “cozy evergreen cottage garden” that the gardener dreamed of. Today we are getting the long-awaited update.
I am a follower of the magazine. I think it is the best garden magazine in English speaking countries, full of tips and wonderful and practical ideas. Some time ago, I sent you the pics of my cottage garden in El Trebol Ezeiza Buenos Aires.
Now I want to share my last gladioli that bloomed a lot in summer (they are so generous!). Now, it is autumn here in Southern Hemisphere and everything is tainted in ochre and yellow. Hope you like them.
All the best! Best wishes, saludos from Buenos Aires.
Ezequiel Martín Barakat
Ezeiza Buenos Aires.
I would say that Ezequiel was very successful in his quest to create an evergreen cottage garden in his climate. While there are lots of gold hues as he mentions above, there is still plenty of lush greenery.
This lushness is even more impressive when you see how much sun his gardens get. This full sun bed is shining, but sun-loving flowers—like the African lily (Agapanthus africanus, Zones 8–10) in the foreground—are providing pops of color.
Another African lily, this one a bright white variety, paired with the towering blooms of a canna.
Equally as bold and bright are the final gladiolus that Ezequiel mentioned in his intro. While his display is beginning to end, gladiolus in North America are just starting their show.
Another shot, potentially on a less sunny day, really shows off the greenery in Ezequiel’s beds. While he lacks the bright fall foliage we enjoy in the Northern Hemisphere, he is able to get those same hot colors from late-blooming flowers.
Even as many of his flowers fade, a lovely mix of colors still remain.
And a better look at the sunny yellow gladiolus.
One last view down Ezequiel’s long beds showcases the beautiful mix of flower colors and foliage textures that he has created. A completely different scene than the space we saw almost a decade ago.
Thank you so much for sharing your garden with us again, Ezequiel! It was amazing to see how much your space has transformed since we’ve seen it last, but I hope we don’t have to wait as long to get another update.
We occasionally get submissions from gardeners in the Southern Hemisphere, and I would absolutely love to get more. No matter where you garden on the globe, we would love to see what you grow and what is in bloom right now. To have your garden featured on Garden Photo of the Day, follow the directions below to submit photos via email, or send me a DM on Instagram: @agirlherdogandtheroad.
