Fantastic Yvonne, I kept saying Wow to myself for every photo. Could you please share with us the names of the climbing roses. Do you have to spray or are they disease resistant?

Yvonne, your garden is the very epitome of what I think of when I think of Virginia...it has such an air of beautiful elegance and refinement. The continuity of the white of the arch trellis and covered seating structure is very soothing to the eye and yet they have lively "pop" because of the abundant rose blossoms cascading about. Your pathways are all so gracious and welcoming for a walk-about to look at all your wonderful plantings...it's definitely a garden that is made for enjoyment.

Oh, good...a reloading of the page just now included your commentary. I always like to read the back story the featured gardener wishes to share...it's usually includes some garden history which is always interesting. Your "rooms" approach is very effective and gives each of your spaces a special personality.

Wow! Beautifully planted gardens, Yvonne! I admire the planning and dedication you've put into your landscape. I always say that I will have a picturesque garden, but each year, I go plant crazy and my yard looks like an outer-space landscape.

If anyone needs me, I will be out in my garden, weeding away the shame... :-)

Trust me, there are lots of weeds in my garden. The advantage of these long range pictures is that you can't see them :)

Very inviting. I love the fountain. It looks familiar. Has this garden been posted before? I don't see any story or links or anything, either on my iPad or computer: only the photos. Thanks for sharing!

Lovely! Thanks for sharing and we hope that we will be back with more photos! I was wondering what variety of Clematis was in the first photo.

That first photo with the double Clematis and the Hydrangea drew me right in to enjoy the rest of your wonderful garden. Great design! I wish I could walk around and explore, see things up close. The square area sitting in the middle of the rocks with the grasses, hosta and shrubs framing it is lovely - is it a water feature? And your roses are beautiful, Yvonne, especially love them climbing up the arched trellis and leaning on the side of the pergola!

Gorgeous roses and I too love the Clematis and the Hydrangea. Love although rooms with there neat hedges and the beautiful arbor.

Thank you all for the very kind comments.
Daniela: the clematis in the first picture is Arctic Queen. It took a while to take off but now in the fourth year is blooming more systematically.
Granny May: that square area was an eyesore...it basically collects water from the neighborhood (we're in the lowest spot) and connects it to a huge stormdrain. So I decided to "camoflague" it with the clethra, ice dance sedge and the oakleaf hydrangeas. The blue box is actually a fairy garden just planted this year with a colleague's daught and some help from one of my god children!
Tim: my garden has not been featured before (so I'm still excited :)
Hello from MD: On the arbor I have two red Edens on either side and an Awakening Climbing rose on the left behind the red Eden. The mauveish clematis on the right is Comte de Chambord and on the left is Jackmannii. On the "summerhouse" structure, I have Zerephrine Drouhin on the left and ZD and Eden on the right. The clematis is Princess of Wales. The rose in the lower right is in the rose bed and is John Clare (a David Austin). I don't spray the climbing roses but do spray the ones in the parterres. Zephy is showing lots of black spot issues already this year so I'm thinking I might just include it in the spraying.
Meander1: always look forward to your thoughtful comments and observations.
Howard: happy to answer any questions you might have.

Now I'm even more impressed with your design capabilities - turning a potential eyesore into a lovely focal point takes skill and imagination!

Envious of the beautiful exposed roses. We have too many deer that find them tasty treats. Gorgeous garden.

What a lovely sprawling formal garden Yvonne - truly a labor of love! Thanks for sharing.

    1. fromvirginia 06/17/2014

Thank you! This is probably the most formal part of the garden. The rest is like the woddland and backyard is relatively informal.
