Last month’s mystery plant was Rhus typhina ‘Bailtiger’, otherwise known as the Tiger Eyes™ cutleaf staghorn sumac. This showy sumac is an improved selection of our eastern native staghorn sumac often seen growing along roadsides. It is dwarf and slow-growing, and sports golden yellow, finely-cut foliage to only 6 feet tall and wide. The yellow glow turns to vivid shades of orange in fall, and this shrub can take tough conditions. It grows best, however, in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8.
