Garden Photo of the Day

Seasonal Interest in NJ

By Kim Charles

A seasonal tour of Barbara Russ's NJ Garden.

"I live in New Jersey where I have planted my gardens to change with the seasons. The pictures I have submitted give the viewer a small snapshot of these gardens in the spring, summer and fall. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do every day."

Hi Barbar(a) - Thanks for showcasing your seasonal colourful garden. It is obviously a fun place, and halloween must be a real hoot.

Lovely garden. Is that a giant rhododendron? Beautiful peonies, too. Thanks for sharing.

This time zone thing is working well for you, Linda.

Yes, now that we're used to it:) We're having a wonderful time seeing the fall color and all of Germany's castles, not to mention missing the last month of the election!

That did go through my mind, Linda, but I didn't want to mention the elephant in the room. Continue to enjoy your trip and stay safe.

Wonderful gardens. I love the coreopsis weaving through the perennial bed. The Japanese maple in your front yard beautifully accents the color of the brick.
And, you have the same Halloween ghost that we have-fabulous (see attached photo)

      GREAT entryway, Kevin!

Kevin, you should submit your autumn garden photos. Stunning October color and garden.

What a fun and festive Oct. walkway, Kevin. Do you get a lot of trick or treaters? I live on a country road and haven't gotten any for years. The problem is that I always feel I need to buy a bag of Snickers just in case. Ha, and so begins my yearly holiday weight gain!

Hi Michaele. I love to decorate for Halloween and Christmas. We get about 80 kids on Halloween, but this is quite a bit less from 10-15 years ago when we used to get over 300 children. My wife and still look forward to the cute kids and their costumes.

Wow, 80 sounds like a plenty big number to me. I can't even begin to imagine handing out candy to over 300. I really miss not having any trick or treaters and teasing them about costumes, etc. so I totally understand you and your wife's continued enthusiasm for the holiday.

I can certainly see why you enjoy your garden every day. It seems to put on a wonderful show in the 3 seasons featured and I'll bet with the structure of that beautiful Japanese maple in the 5th picture, things look lovely in the winter as well. Love all the fun decorations you have to celebrate Halloween. I'm guessing you live in a neighborhood that has children doing some trick or treating which can be fun for grownups as well as kids.
I'm stumped on what the darker pink flowering tree/bush is in the 3rd picture...it seems to be shaped into a standard ...ID please?

Beautiful! Love those "Raspberry Sundae (?) peonies. Looks like you have a lovely yard to work... and play... in. Fun Halloween decor.

    Beautiful. Love all the flowers.

Once again, peony envy. I live in Zone 8b so can't have them. You are the epitome of the Garden State. Just lovely.

Hi Barbara, your gardens are lovely and peaceful! I have the same question as Michaele, what is the standard with the pink flowers? Are you North or South Jersey? What zone? I'm guessing 6..

  11. Cenepk10 10/20/2016

Yes !!! I did enjoy it !!! Such a pretty pretty property! The peonies make me want to skip winter & go straight to spring! And the irises ! Love them all... thanks for sharing!
