I retired several years ago as a non-academic staff member of the University of California, Santa Cruz, and now enjoy a wide range of activities. I am active as consultant, mostly developing grant proposals for public and private agencies. I am also a Master Gardener and a member of several local garden groups. I write a weekly garden column for the Monterey Herald (To see recent columns, search montereyherald.com for "Karwin.")
