I have lived for 6 years in this Cape Cod cottage with couple acres on the marsh in Tidewater, Virginia. About 1/3 marsh, 1/3 wooded and 1/3 almost full sun. I mostly do ornamentals, but dabble in the kitchen garden. I currently have 35 different varieties in my Hosta collection.

My biggest challenges are:
-shallow well makes irrigation difficult (drippers are working pretty well)
-voles love hostas as much as I do

I recently had a professional landscape designed and am eager to start developing the ideas in it.

Re: You Want To Paint My What?

Such a bizarre concept: to plant something that grows to 18 inches tall, cut it back to 2 inches repeatedly and not eat the crop. So much time, money and effort wasted. And those chemicals washing into my marsh! My plan is to keep expanding the flower beds until there is just enough room for a good game of ball with Mr. Mojo. My husband and I have decided that crabgrass is attractive. It stays green all summer without any supplemental water. Is it native?

Re: Test your gardening IQ

I got 19 right, but I can't let it go. What was different about the petunia? I agree they should explain the correct answer, that's how we learn. It happens that I have the 3 Hosta s listed so it was the process of elimination.
