Winter Dreaming

Although the garden is buried under at least a foot of snow all winter long, I still look out the windows to enjoy the garden beauty.   Jack Frost does some of his best masterpieces in...

Re: READER PHOTOS! Michaele's garden in Tennessee

the little stone house on the hill is PERFECT! Just love it!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Pauline's garden in California, in spring

Gorgeous trees! I only have a couple Jap. maples because I don't have much shade, mostly full sun. I love the intense color they have, especially Katsura. Your loropetalum also seems to have day-glow colors. Lovely!

Re: READER PHOTOS: Brenda's garden in Georgia, Day 2

Lovely spring containers! Tulips are hardy here and mine come back every year - but the deer like them too!

Can you elaborate on the auger you use? drill attachment? Stand up tool? thanks

Is that snapdragon with the tulips in the first photo? How do you get them to bloom so early? Gorgeous combination!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Brenda's garden in South Carolina

I REALLY like your fountain with the ball on top and the circular basins beneath. So classy! Wish I could find one like that.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Sheila's container gardens in Colorado

love the face planter next to the sofa.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Karen's garden in Ohio

are those banana trees? in pots? Not cold hardy, I would think.

lovely setting!

Re: READER PHOTO! Melissa's garden in New Jersey

Fabulous!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Bob & Mary Ann's garden in Kentucky

It's astounding what they have accomplished in only 3 years. Great job! Love the grass paths.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Pauline's garden in California: water features

You have so many water features! lovely! I don't have any, too intimidated by maintenance.

Another question, if you have mosquito fish, don't the birds just gobble them up?

Re: READER PHOTOS! Jan's garden in Ohio, revisited

What I like about the gate is how it frames the lovely stone path. The moss between the stones is so soothing, and I know how hard it is to keep that weed free, so well done!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Denise's garden in upstate New York

All your stone paths lend a relaxed, natural note, and having stone paths everywhere unifies the garden. Superb foliage plants.

Re: BEHOLD! The GPOD Pinterest Page!

very nice!

Re: Eve's garden in Tennessee

LOVE LOVE LOVE all that stonework! Gorgeous!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Tim's garden in Ohio, Day 2: The front yard

love the before and after photos. Love the rocks! Great job.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Terie's garden in New York

What a lovely cottage! I think I'm going to steal your idea of putting icicle lights around my garden shed. Really enjoyed the first summer / winter views, just as pretty in winter.

Re: READER PHOTO! More from Lola's garden in New York

watered down latex paint won't peel?? why not?

nice colored arch!

Re: Happy New Year!!

deer spray does keep them off the hosta, a bit of work, but well worth it.

my resolution is to grow salad greens this year. I grow everything else, but never seem to find the right spot or start early enough. And then I spend $5 a bag for the greens when I could grow a whole season's worth for $5 of seed. this year it's salad greens!

Re: READER PHOTOS! More from Pauline's garden in California

love the bridge and garden steps leading away uphill. the last photos of the colors of fall is just beautiful.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Gary's Japanese garden in Nova Scotia

thanks gardener guy - I really want to try this!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Odile's garden in New York

What a lovely burst of color on a gray winter day! Your walkway is very inviting.

Re: Happy Holidays!!

how original!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Gary's Japanese garden in Nova Scotia

How nice to have koi and water lilies, what a great present for your parents.

Please tell if there is anything special you do to overwinter the gunnera. I have admired these forever but they're not hardy here, so would love to hear how you manage it.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Katy & Tom's garden in Massachusetts

love the hosta bed!

Re: READER PHOTOS! More from Bonnie's garden in Pennsylvania

I love how she decorated her potting shed for Christmas!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Kielian's garden in Montana

What fabulous color all through the year!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Michael's garden in Oregon

I love the lush, crowded, cottagey look of flowers and conifers. Gorgeous!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Linda's Garden in California

She's a master!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Pauline's garden in California, in full fall color

wow wow wow!! So colorful it appears fake. this gorgeous scene has made my day.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Pauline's garden in California, revisited

wow! Great color!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Nancy's garden in New York

that's it! I'm buying some lotus!

Re: READER PHOTO! Jan Johnsen in upstate New York

I love seeing professional and public gardens. They are beautiful and can be appreciated for what they are. Doesn't matter if I can't copy it. I can't copy tropical themes or desert themes either, but I still enjoy viewing them.

I love seeing them all, big, small, expensive, on a shoestring, wild, outrageous whatever.

Re: READER PHOTO! Marilyn's garden in Washington state

I have always found mirrors in the garden to be a delightful "trick" to expand the garden view. This is like a window to another garden room.

Re: READER PHOTO! Jan Johnsen in upstate New York

check out her blog video - the waterfall is set in a huge parklike garden. but more still photos would really show it at its best.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Bulking up for a long winter

That's a lot of koi! How colorful!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Eamonn's garden in Oregon

Fabulous fall color! I had no idea it could be so colorful in the fall in the PNW, I thought the Northeast had the corner on that. Wonderful combinations.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Nora's garden in Australia

I really like the stepping stones through the pea gravel.

Re: A busy bench demands a busy plant

I have this exact same bench. Mine is behind an arbor with clematis growing up both sides.

Re: A mesmerizing hedge on Long Island

Love it! This is quite old, they must have taken care of these for decades.

Re: READER PHOTOS! A clean slate transformed

You've got a naturally green thumb. Looks fabulous, especially compared with those plain green lawns.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Viktoria's garden in Connecticut

Brilliant! Superb arrangement of textures and forms, and bright color, love it!

Re: READER PHOTOS! More from Brenda's garden in Georgia

It's easy to see your garden is well loved. Kudos for keeping it all so lush and healthy.

Would love to see the other side of that giant "basket handle".

Re: Tis the season...

Such a nice variety of grasses, good mixture of heights and seedheads. Mine are "blooming" now, and I must say they look better in person than in photos.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Leslie's garden in Colorado Springs

Leslie does an amazing job creating so many different garden looks in a self-described small space. Love the stipa in the deck garden, creates a great vertical accent.

Re: READER PHOTO! Pauline's garden in Carmichael, California

How tranquil! Lovely composition in photo.

Re: The Ghost Walk

All of these public gardens are quite wonderful.

My 2 cents, it would be nice to see some home garden photos.

Re: Slideshow: Personal Touches Make All the Difference

just lovely!

Re: Les Quatre Vents - Botanical music

OK - You've convinced me! One day I must make a journey to see these amazing gardens!

Re: Les Quatre Vents - An optical illusion

In my former house I had a full size mirror mounted on the fence that looked like a doorway through to another garden. Very successful illusion. Regular glass mirror, nothing special.

This mirror illusion is very classy!

Re: More from the ruins garden at Chanticleer

looks like water wheel buckets

Re: Ouch!

Just 2 days ago my friend was cutting firewood and had a run in with one of these. One of the large thorns went through his leather glove and all the way straight through his thumb. His wife (a nurse) tried pulling the thorn out with vise grips but it wouldn't budge. He had to go to the doctor to have them cut off the glove and cut open his thumb to remove this thorn. talk about OUCH

Re: Perfection is boring

How about a hose stretched out and snaking through the beds, is that ok? MIne are only coiled up when company's coming.

Re: And finally, some COLOR!

Wow! Amazing gobs of color, love it!

Re: Free at last!

amazing photo, great title

Re: READER PHOTO! A second season in a Utah garden

great color!

Re: Veggie trellising ideas from Longwood Gardens

I'd love to know which plants they were growing on which trellises. Presumably they use different styles because cucumbers need different supports from sweet peas.

Very nice, I'd like to copy one. (when I find the time . . .)

Re: Repetition is the key to happiness

Way cool!

Re: Winterthur primroses

Gorgeous! I love candelabra primroses, and after seeing a fabulous display at my friends, I wintersowed them this year. Now I've got 30 "plugs" growing in the garden.

Re: Frogs from another dimension

I think you've got it Mindy!

They did full size horses in our local town for charity, and they have buffaloes in Buffalo NY, of course.

Re: Frogs from another dimension

Where can I get one? Just love em!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Dripping with atmosphere

Is this moss hanging from a pergola-like structure? Did you just buy the moss and decorate with it? Very cool.

Re: READER PHOTO! The original robin's egg blue

Our robin's eggs are a much paler blue . . .

Beautiful!

Re: READER PHOTOS! Dr. Seuss would be a fan of this plant...

I'll bet the deer would LOVE that.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Containers by Cherry Ong

Some of the best container plantings I have ever seen!

Re: Watering cans as garden ornaments

Love it!

Re: Reflections at Chanticleer, revisited

I want to go to Chanticleer! I want to see the ruins garden!

Re: Highlighting a gorgeous tree

A charming little vignette! It's the details that make a garden; I would certainly pause on my way up the steps to appreciate this lovely scene.

Re: In the mist

If only it could be so serene in Japan now. Such terrible devastation there.

Re: READER PHOTO! Spring reflection

Such a lovely photo! And the wood duck appear at just the right spot. You have quite an eye, this is a great photo.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Springtime at Longwood

Gorgeous! Could you tell us what date you took those photos? So if I want to visit, I would know when spring arrives in Longwood Gardens.

THanks

Re: READER PHOTO! An arch completes the garden

What a perfect spot! I love everything about this photo. The stone path drawing your eye, the golden shrubs brightening up a shady area, and of course the roses that you can almost smell.

The linked photos are also amazing. Wished I lived in MD, I would definitely be coming to your tour.

Re: Garden in Winter 1st runner-up! Dreaming of Summer

In winter I actually have time to sit in the chairs, no chores to do. Now where's that Irish coffee!

Re: How aggressive IS it?

Evil, definitely evil. It is simply uncontrollable, worse than just about any other plant.

Don't do it!

Re: Are your plants superhydrophobic?

I love the way raindrops bead on lady's mantle as well, quite similar.

Re: The Garden in Winter Photo Contest: Official Rules

I understand that FG will own the photo. But will they identify the photographer in publication, so at least they get credit?

Re: READER PHOTO! Curved terrace stairs tame a slope

Gorgeous! The grass steps are quite a clever way to tame that slope. Haven't seen that before, but I really like it!

Re: READER PHOTO! A blue gate that's irresistible to visitors

Very handsome! nice design, the gold really makes the blue gate stand out.

I also have a spiral vegetable garden. Would love to see your photos of that!

Re: An unusual English ivy

The Erie COunty Botanical Gardens in Buffalo has a winter show with an amazing variety of different ivies. Probably a hundred different types, never knew there were so many possibilities.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Fairy gardens in the land of...Washington

My daughter would love this!

Re: Let a clematis scramble

Thanks for the answer Mindy, that makes sense. Lovely combo!

Re: Let a clematis scramble

Great combo! Love the dwarf Hinoki cypress, how does it tolerate the clematis? I would worry that the clematis would be too heavy and shading for it. Have they been growing together long?

Re: Not an ordinary clematis

This is not an ordinary clematis because it is FRAGRANT! I grow many different varieties of clematis, this is one of the only ones that has a gorgeous sweet scent on summer days. I have it planted right next to my garden bench so I can enjoy the scent.

Re: READER PHOTOS! A gem of a succulent garden

Fabulous garden! All those succulents remind me of underwater corals and sponges, could be an "under the sea" theme.

Re: This plant's future is in your hands...

Save it! It's a beautiful specimen. But prune it back over the steps and keep the rest.

Re: Blurring the boundary

While it's an interesting look, it seems quite impractical. Uneven, loose stones jutting up at different heights would be very hard to navigate without tripping. Quite a hazard, and on a walkway too! It's nice to try to be artsy, but not at the expense of functionality.

Re: A book-matched set

Only the sedge is hardy for Conn., So this bed must be replanted every year? Seems a shame not to have done something in perennials.

Re: The American Meadow Garden : Win A Free Copy of John Greenlee's Book!

I have been a fan of grass gardens for years. I have been quietly collecting quite a variety of grasses that I grow in my flower beds. (various miscanthus, zebra grasses, fescues, etc) One day I want to make an all grass garden but need to research it more before I take the plunge. This book would be great for that!
