Optimism for another year

Hellebore 'Ivory Prince,' given to me by a friend before she moved back to Norway

Emma in Helen Dimos's garden

Helen invited us over to photograph her peonies. I was nervous about Emma being off leash in someone else's garden but Helen wasn't. Emma was admirably respectful!

Emma in the alliums

Dogs in the garden are best! Who else is content to just sit with you as you weed?

As a puppy, Emma loved all the new tastes in the garden

I couldn't believe that she just sat down and started chewing on the hosta's flower stalk.

Emma shows Sydney how much she likes daylilies

... notice Emma's tongue.

Dakotah poses with the dianthus

He liked to be out in the garden with me, but this was one of the very few times he sat still and posed for the camera.

Re: READER PHOTOS! More from Kielian's garden in Montana

It's fun to see the landscape going from the summer/fall photos into the winter! Thanks for posting them.

Re: Magical Smoke Tree Colors

Wonderful colors!

Re: Less can be more in containers

Love how she kept it clean and non-fussy. The viewer gets to enjoy these distinctly different plants, and their attributes.

Re: Veggie trellising ideas from Longwood Gardens

The A-frame trellis is exquisite. It can stand alone as a sculpture, but knowing that it'll be functional as well, makes it all the more wonderful.

Re: READER PHOTOS! Dr. Seuss would be a fan of this plant...

Once established is it as easy to grow as other arborvitaes? It adds a wonderful texture contrast to your garden.

Re: Pansies at Filoli

The pansies are lovely, but what I really like is the brickwork pattern!

Re: Purple and Chartreuse

LOVE these colors!

Re: Shakespeare on pruning

A truly hort-nerd bit of writing ... Loved it.

Re: The Garden in Winter, Day #4

Wonderful !

Re: READER PHOTO! Lemonade from lemons

What a great looking throne!

Re: Look again!

The mirror is VERY effective, but I too, worry about the birds,

Re: Reaching for the sky

WHAT a wonderful use of a wall!

Re: Birdhouses are a pop of color in borders

I'm pretty sure that the artists who made these were Anne Rugg and Doug Ostrander. Doug is/was a fine jeweler who switched over to making these.

Re: Alliums amongst the ferns

Wonderful colors and textures!

Re: Garden Design - A Dog's Eye View

Emma, my garden advisor (http://www.finegardening.com/profile/KariLonning) wanted me to add that paths and overall structure could be added to dog and people friendly consideration. Using the grey-scale technique or photographing the garden in winter can add useful information on these as well. When Biff gets his blog up, Emma would like to be notified.

Re: Shade loving lily like?

Possibly -- Epipactis helleborine?
http://www.ct-botanical-society.org/galleries/epipactishell.html

Look at the leaves close to the ground. The twistedstalk looks a lot like our Solomon Seal and doesn't appear to have broad, rounded basal leaves. (I have the same plant growing here, in CT, and the deer just ate the three strongest spikes. I'd like to dig up a few of the remaining ones, but they're on private property.)

Re: A perfect marriage of plants and hardscape

The closeup shot details is one of the most beautiful photos I've seen on the internet. The plant choices, colors and combinations are seductive!

Re: Unknown Plant

it's Evening Primrose. Be careful where you plant it because if it's happy, it'll SPREAD.

Re: READER PHOTO! It's a bouncing baby...mantid! Or 500...

If the grownup praying mantis wasn't such a wonderful thing, this would be ... gross. Am i reading this correctly that out of this whole hatch, you only expect one to survive, so stay due to being territorial? Michelle, do they sell these nests in CT?

Re: A quiet spot to rest

This would be such a wonderful retreat when it gets warmer ...

Re: What is this, please?

Re: READER PHOTO: Artichokes are bold and beautiful!

What a beautifully architectural statement this makes. (And the color balance, too!)

Re: READER PHOTO: Shades of blue and gray

This is one of my favorite photos to be posted so far. Between the colors and leave shape/textures, it's wonderful.

Re: A juicy combo for a container

Interesting group of leaves!

Re: Murphy pulls up a seat

That is too funny. I wonder if it's an OES thing. Emma will back up to the steps and just sit down ...

Re: Emma in Helen Dimos's garden

I will pass on the complement!

Re: Tarragon Boy

fun textures!

Re: A pink pairing for a meadow

What a beautiful sweep of color and texture!

Re: Someone has to supervise

I think it's a "Snoopie" thing. Dogs like to be high enough that they can look down on the rest of us. (My sister took a photo of my OES standing on their outdoor table. She was standing there looking to see if anyone noticed.)

Re: Frost on the Cabbage

What a beautiful photo!

Re: Rare snow in San Francisco Bay Area

Wonderful textures and composition

Re: And the winners of the November photo challenge are...

I'm glad that you liked the photo. Thank-you!
