Optimism for another year
Hellebore 'Ivory Prince,' given to me by a friend before she moved back to Norway
Emma in Helen Dimos's garden
Helen invited us over to photograph her peonies. I was nervous about Emma being off leash in someone else's garden but Helen wasn't. Emma was admirably respectful!
Emma in the alliums
Dogs in the garden are best! Who else is content to just sit with you as you weed?
As a puppy, Emma loved all the new tastes in the garden
I couldn't believe that she just sat down and started chewing on the hosta's flower stalk.
Emma shows Sydney how much she likes daylilies
... notice Emma's tongue.
Dakotah poses with the dianthus
He liked to be out in the garden with me, but this was one of the very few times he sat still and posed for the camera.

Re: READER PHOTOS! More from Kielian's garden in Montana
It's fun to see the landscape going from the summer/fall photos into the winter! Thanks for posting them.

Love how she kept it clean and non-fussy. The viewer gets to enjoy these distinctly different plants, and their attributes.

The A-frame trellis is exquisite. It can stand alone as a sculpture, but knowing that it'll be functional as well, makes it all the more wonderful.

Once established is it as easy to grow as other arborvitaes? It adds a wonderful texture contrast to your garden.

I'm pretty sure that the artists who made these were Anne Rugg and Doug Ostrander. Doug is/was a fine jeweler who switched over to making these.

Emma, my garden advisor (http://www.finegardening.com/profile/KariLonning) wanted me to add that paths and overall structure could be added to dog and people friendly consideration. Using the grey-scale technique or photographing the garden in winter can add useful information on these as well. When Biff gets his blog up, Emma would like to be notified.

Possibly -- Epipactis helleborine?

Look at the leaves close to the ground. The twistedstalk looks a lot like our Solomon Seal and doesn't appear to have broad, rounded basal leaves. (I have the same plant growing here, in CT, and the deer just ate the three strongest spikes. I'd like to dig up a few of the remaining ones, but they're on private property.)
Re: A perfect marriage of plants and hardscape
The closeup shot details is one of the most beautiful photos I've seen on the internet. The plant choices, colors and combinations are seductive!

it's Evening Primrose. Be careful where you plant it because if it's happy, it'll SPREAD.

If the grownup praying mantis wasn't such a wonderful thing, this would be ... gross. Am i reading this correctly that out of this whole hatch, you only expect one to survive, so stay due to being territorial? Michelle, do they sell these nests in CT?

I think it's a "Snoopie" thing. Dogs like to be high enough that they can look down on the rest of us. (My sister took a photo of my OES standing on their outdoor table. She was standing there looking to see if anyone noticed.)
