Foliage, Textures & Blooms
All of these photos were taken in my front yard between June and August. I love the interplay of the texture of foliage with simple blooms.
Antique Shades Pansies
A mass of pink, pale yellow and apricot Antique Shades pansies crowded together in a pot for spring.

My garden Puglet!
Front Yard Garden Fall 2008
My designs are usually based on working backward through the seasons for strength and drama here in a cold, gray climate for much of the year. So, I think if it looks really great in Fall going into...
Container contest entry last summer
This was my entry into a magazine pot competition last summer.
Great summer color!
Great Summer color!
Front Yard Garden 2008
Each year I choose a different color theme for the front yard. This year was Orange, Violet and Chartruese. I love color!

I think that I took this photo "pre-slug attacks!" But also, I've very disciplined about my slug defense routine. Every day of the week, I'm on the patrol and using my pet-safe bait frequently during the hatching season.

Looks very much like a Coffee plant to me. Are the blooms close to the stem?

Billy and Kate- Huge Kudos to both of you. Learned and laughed through the video. Wonderful topic too. Really got people's brains rattled a bit!

I was flattened for a week with an old back injury, and wouldn't ya know? It up and died, while nothing else did. It was quite classy looking, though I have no photographic evidence to back up the inadvertent negligence, the compost company does.
After digging it up, I realized that a crack had developed across the bottom of the trunk at soil level that went horizontally 3/4 of the way around.
Looking forward to more videos!
Re: Rainbow Leaves
It is most definitely a Witch Hazel, Hamamaelis. Those grow here in my zone like Zuchini! Easy, hardy and very prolific.

Hi Billy,
posted: 5:05 pm on April 29thI'm so excited about your new blog! Kate Frank/FG has found a gem in you!
As a fellow Gardener/Hort-Head who is also against lawn whenever possible, and into sustainable gardens, I will enjoy following your witty and playful writing style.
I'm not sure what the proper horticultural version is for "break a leg", maybe "break a shovel"?
Have fun, Billy!

My yard is small on purpose since downsizing from last giant home to live more simply. This book would be a neat way to make the most of it!

Funny that you should mention that, the path began as 3/4 inch crushed gravel. But, I couldn't get the lawnmower over it, then I added pea gravel, and it seeded weeds too easily. Finally, I topped it with the bark mulch, which compacted really nice over the other two layers and never needed weeding!

Thank you so much blondeartist! That's exactly what it is! After seeing your garden photos, it figures that you would come up with the name!

The Red and Orange Heathers are my favorites! In my gray climate here in the Seattle area, we can use all of the color we can get. So, I design with those frequently.

Those are an apparently rare form of Arborvitae that stay very narrow and will eventually be about 9ft. if let go. I wish I could remember the name! If I do I'll post it. It's the last name of the person who developed the particular variety. Now it's going to drive me crazy trying to remember!

Unfortunately, a very bad snow and ice storm have wiped out many valuable Phormiums in this garden. It's going to be an expensive Spring!!!
