Purpleleaf grape

Vitis vinifera ‘Purpurea’

One of the best vines for colorful fall foliage, this woody deciduous climber has graceful purple leaves which redden in autumn for a fiery foliage display. Also in autumn, the vine bears clusters of tiny, edible blue-black grapes that are sweet inside but have bitter skins.

Noteworthy CharacteristicsUse to adorn a wall or train on a small trellis or arbor. More compact than other grapevines, 'Purpurea' climbs to about 20 feet. Leaves may turn green in mid-summer, but will color up again in fall.

CareGrow in well-drained soil and full sun. Prune while dormant so stems won't weep sap.

ProblemsDowny mildew, canker and dieback, gray mold, Pierce's disease, black rot, and various leaf spots occur. Grape leaf skeletonizer, Japanese beetles, scale insects, and mealybugs.
