Great plant -- gorgeous blue foliage. Mine dies back in most winters and has only bloomed when it's made it through the winter unscathed by cold and wind. It's in rocky soil -- I have continued to add soil and mulch on top each year. It is in mostly sun with some afternoon shade. This year it started from roots and is now (end October) about seven feet tall and wide.

I live on California's Central Coast, and melianthus is a year-round winner, providing structure, interest, and general robustness to a driveway-side garden. What a beautiful plant! My neighbors love to talk about it, wondering if it's an artichoke, a cardoon, a ... The red-brown enormous flower spikes are unbelievable in the winter. Though many guides say to provide moist soil, I only water this 5 x 6 specimen once every two weeks in our mild climate. It's pretty drought-tolerant! Plus, it'll take any amount of wind without damage.
