Dense clusters of pendulous yellow flowers dangle from spreading branches in late spring. Leaves are dark green. Smooth green bark adds some winter interest.
Noteworthy characteristics: This member of the pea family is a cross between L. alpinum and L. anagyroides. It has poisonous seed pods.
Care: Grow in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. In the North, wrap trunks to prevent sun scald in winter. Do not prune except to remove damaged wood.
Propagation: Graft in late winter, or bud in summer.
Problems: Leaf spot, canker, twig blight, and top dieback, as well as aphids and mealybugs.
