This dense, evergreen holly reaches 6 to 10 feet tall and at least as wide. The species is rarely used in landscapes, but there are many cultivars available with more interesting shape and color. This plant grows slowly, but can be invasive. Its dark green leaves are lustrous and the black fruit is hidden beneath them, so it is not obvious as in other hollies. Use Japanese holly in foundation plantings, hedges, beds and borders, or formal gardens.
 Care: Provide full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil in a sheltered location. Prefers slightly acidic soil.   
 Propagation: From cuttings.

Lemon-lime foliage, fuzzy stems, and intense fall color make this sumac cultivar a standout. It grows into an upright, rounded form about 6 feet tall and as wide. New growth emerges chartreuse. 'Schubert' choke cherry has a pyramidal form and vivid foliage that makes it a great focal point. Abundant, dark red-purple fruit follow the ephemeral, light pink flowers. The fruit is attractive to birds, so 'Schubert' choke cherry should not be planted near patios or walks due to the calling cards well-fed birds leave behind. Ask if the tree you buy is grafted onto nonsuckering rootstock; otherwise, suckers could pose problems down the road.

Full-moon maple has deeply lobed leaves, crimson autumn color, and plenty of small, reddish flowers in spring. It can be grown as a small tree or multi-stemmed shrub. Because it is a relative of the immensely popular burning bush (E. alatus), it isn't surprising that eastern wahoo has great fall color. This North American native grows as a small tree in the southern part of its range and as a large shrub on the Plains. The bright red of its fall foliage is amplified and extended by abundant clusters of scarlet fruits that persist after the leaves have fallen, providing color even into midwinter.
