Botanical Name: Hypericum androsaemum 'Albury Purple' Common Name: Tutsan Genus: Hypericum
This is a bushy, deciduous shrub with upright branches. Purple-flushed green leaves grow up to 4 inches long and are mildly resin scented when bruised. 'Albury Purple' bears stalked, star-shaped or cupped yellow flowers, up to 11 per cluster on distinctive 2-edged stems. Round, red berry-like fruit follows.
Care: Provide full sun to part shade and moist but well-drained soil. Too much shade will decrease the number of flowers. Plants may die to the ground in winter but will send off new growth in the spring.
Propagation: Sow seed in a cold frame in autumn. Divide in spring or autumn. Take softwood cuttings in late spring; greenwood or semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
Problems: Thrips, scale, anthracnose, rust, and leaf spots. Also wilt and root rot, particularly in hot and humid climates.
