Botanical Name:
Hosta sieboldiana 'Elegans'
HOSS-tah see-bold-ee-AY-nah variety EL-eh-ganz
Common Name: Hosta
Synonyms: , H. 'Robusta'
Genus:
Hosta
One of the largest hostas available, ‘Elegans’ has deep, smoky blue foliage with a slight hint of frost. The heart-shaped leaves remind me of a handheld paddle with deeply defined veins. White flowers rise above the leaves on long stems. Though slugs love hostas, this one is usually left untouched.
This early-blooming, clumping perennial has thick, round, corrugated, powder-blue leaves 8 to 10 inches long, topped by lilac-tinted white or pure white flowers rising just above the foliage in early spring.
Noteworthy characteristics:
Use in the back of a mixed border or as landscape specimens.
Care:
Grow in moist but well-drained, fertile soil. Shade tolerant. Grows best with full morning sun. Tolerates drought, but a summer mulch is beneficial.
Propagation:
Divide plants in late summer or early spring.
Problems:
Slugs, snails, viruses, foliar nematodes. In containers, watch for vine weevils.
