Botanical Name: Helianthus divaricatus hee-lee-AN-thus div-air-ih-KAY-tus Common Name: Woodland sunflower Genus: Helianthus

July through September, this sunflower bears golden yellow flowerheads with 8 to 9 ray florets around darker orange-yellow disk florets. Stems are tall and hairy; lance-shaped mid-green leaves are rounded at the base, appearing in opposite pairs.
Noteworthy characteristics: Found in partly shady places in the eastern U.S.
Care: Grows best in moist but well-drained, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil, but tolerates a wide range of soils and growing conditions.
Propagation: Divide in spring or autumn. Root basal cuttings in spring.
Problems: Common: downy mildew, powdery mildew, canker, rust, and many fungal leaf spots. Also susceptible to damage from caterpillars, cutworms, beetles, and weevils.
