Ruta graveolens

Eight or so species of shrubs and perennials from dry and rocky habitats belong to this genus. The leaves and flowers are very strongly scented. Foliage is very tiny, sometimes bluish green, and finely cut. Historically, rue was used in cooking or medicinally. The flowers are unusual looking and yellow, and borne at the end of stems. Leaves have a bitter taste and are toxic.

Noteworthy CharacteristicsAromatic leaves and flowers. All parts of the plant may cause severe discomfort if eaten and the foliage may cause severe dermatitis. Thrives in hot, dry sites.

CareGrow in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, very well-drained soil.

PropagationPropagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer, or sow seed in a cold frame in spring.

ProblemsGenerally trouble-free, but Phytophthora root rot can sometimes cause problems.
