The genus Mukdenia contains a couple of herbaceous perennials from the woodlands of northeast Asia. These slowly spreading plants have long stalks of lobed, toothed leaves. Small, bell-shaped flowers bloom in spring. Grow in a woodland garden, mostly in areas with cool, damp summers.
Noteworthy characteristics: Attractive lobed leaves.
Care: Grow in woodsy, moist but well-drained soil in dappled or part shade.
Propagation: Sow seed in a cold frame in autumn, or divide before the buds expand in spring.
Problems: Slugs and snails may eat new growth.

Attractive, glossy, fan-shaped leaves and creamy white bell-shaped flowers are borne in dense panicles for several weeks in spring. After flowering is complete, green leaves turn a rich burgundy color with reddish orange highlights on their margins.
