Genus Jasminum (Jasmine, Jessamine)

jaz-MEE-num Common Name: Jasmine, Jessamine
Jasminum is a genus of 200 or more species of shrubs and vines that are grown mainly for their star-shaped, often fragrant flowers. The foliage is also attractive. Flowers are often followed by black berries. Grow climbing species over a trellis, fence, shrub, or archway. Dwarf species are nice in a rock garden.
Noteworthy characteristics: Fragrant, starry flowers. Black berries.
Care: Site in full sun or partial shade and fertile, well-drained soil. In the greenhouse, Jasminum needs bright light with shade from hot sun and ample water during growth. Pruning varies by species.
Propagation: Start new plants from semi-ripe cuttings in summer or by layering fall.
Problems: Common problems include root rot, fungal and bacterial leaf spots, and viruses, while aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs can also cause trouble.
