The genus Gaura is made up of 20 or so species of annuals, biennials, perennials, and subshrubs from North America's moist habitats and prairies. Leaves are mainly basal. Long, flexible wands of 4-petaled, pink or white, starry flowers wave in the breeze. Use the graceful form of Gaura in a border.
Noteworthy characteristics: North American natives. Delicate-looking, graceful flowers.
Care: Prefers full sun and fertile, moist but well-drained soil, but can take part shade and some drought.
Propagation: Annuals may be sown where they are to grow in the garden. Perennials should be started in a cold frame in spring or early summer, or divided in spring, or started from cuttings in spring or summer.
Problems: Rust, leaf spots, and mildews.
