Genus Farfugium

This genus contains just two species of perennials from waterside areas of East Asia. These are evergreen foliage plants with large leathery leaves and daisy-like yellow flowers. Cultivars of this genus produce clean, rounded foliage with big, irregular splashes of white or cream, and matte gray-green leaves in a glorious tangle of crispy edges. Farfugium do well in the border or in containers, or as groundcover near water.  
 Noteworthy characteristics: Large, attractive leaves.
 Care: Fertile, well-drained soil in partial shade. Shelter from midday sun and drying winds.
 Propagation: Sow seed in a cold frame in winter or spring. Divide in spring.
 Problems: Slugs.

Green-and-yellow mottled, shiny, kidney-shaped leaves distinguish this evergreen perennial native to streamsides and seashores in East Asia. The large, leathery leaves can reach a foot across. The yellow flowers bloom in fall and winter, but they are small and secondary to the foliage. Farfugium are nice at waterside, as a groundcover, in a border, or in containers.
