These superb shrubs and small trees have magnificent autumn color and season-long architectural qualities. In spring, clusters of pendulous, veined bells in shades of white to ruby hang along the graceful, tiered branches. 
Noteworthy characteristics: Site as centerpieces in a small garden, or as part of a larger shrub border or open woodland where they have room to mature gracefully. Enkianthus is native to the open woodlands from the Himalayas to Japan.
Care: Grow in humus rich, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade.
Propagation: Sow seed in late winter or early spring, take semi-ripe cuttings in summer, or layer in autumn.
Problems: Usually trouble-free.

This tree-like shrub bears pendent clusters of bell-shaped, creamy-white flowers with rose veins in late spring and early summer. In autumn, the foliage turns magnificent shades of orange and red.

This is perhaps the most refined Enkianthus, bearing dainty, white pendulous bells in May. It forms an elegant, rounded shrub to 6 feet with gracefully tiered branches and produces brilliant scarlet color in autumn.
