Genus Deutzia

Deutzia Deutzia crenata var. nakaiana 'Nikko' Photo/Illustration: Daryl Beyers
DEWT-see-ah
Deutzia are low-maintenance shrubs from the Himalayas. They provide ample structure in mixed or shrub borders. Their masses of flowers bloom for weeks from mid-spring to midsummer, and are often fragrant.
Noteworthy characteristics: Pendulous clusters of 5-petaled pink or white flowers. Some species have attractive, peeling bark.
Care: Grow in moderately fertile and moist soil in full sun. Periodic thinning of branches will maintain the arching forms.
Propagation: Sow seed in a cold frame in fall; take softwood cuttings in summer, and hardwood cuttings in fall.
Problems: Fungal leaf spots.
