Genus Claytonia (Spring beauty)

Common Name: Spring beauty
This genus contains slightly more than a dozen small, rather dainty-looking perennials and annuals from the mountains of Australia, New Zealand, and North America. Foliage is succulent and sometimes evergreen. Pink or white, 5-petaled flowers bloom in spring. Grow in a rock garden, woodland, scree bed, or alpine house. Some will naturalize.
 Noteworthy characteristics: Succulent foliage. Small but pretty flowers in spring. Some go dormant in the summer.
 Care: Grow in full sun and very well-drained soil that is gritty and organically rich. Will not tolerate excessive winter moisture.
 Propagation: Start seed in containers outdoors in autumn.
 Problems: Aphids, downy mildew, rust.

This low-growing, spring-blooming succulent touts 5-petaled, pale-pink striped flowers with strap-like foliage that continues to grow after bloom but disappears in late spring when the plants go into dormancy. It can literally carpet the ground in early spring, giving the impression of a light dusting of snow. Its flowers open when the sun is out and close when it is cloudy.
